Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Treatment Services

Our specialized ASD Team consists of psychologists with knowledge and expertise in 'gold standard' assessment and evidence-based treatment for individuals with ASD across the lifespan. We offer practical and effective interventions that address the diverse communication, social, behavioural and mental health needs of individuals with ASD.

Our team's treatment model is extensive, and includes interventions based on applied behaviour analysis (ABA), pivotal response treatment (PRT), positive behaviour support (PBS), cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and mindfulness.

Services are offered both in office and in the community (home, daycare, school, work settings), and include collaboration with other service providers (e.g., speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, etc.)

Parent Training in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) for Preschool-Aged Children:
Evidence clearly supports intervening early with preschool-aged children with ASD. We offer family and care provider training in PRT, a highly acclaimed research-based treatment for autism. PRT targets areas for intervention that are considered 'pivotal' (e.g., motivation to socially-communicate). It is largely play-based and child led - while learning, your child is also having fun.

In PRT, a major emphasis is placed on teaching parents and care providers strategies to intervene effectively with children within their daily routines. We offer parent training in PRT at your home, with your child.

Training involves a 1 hour intake appointment, four 2-hour sessions of PRT parent training (typically completed over a one-week span) and a brief summary with recommendations for your family.

Our PRT training is led by a Level V PRT trainer (certified through Koegel Autism Consultants Santa Barbara, California).

ASD Coaching and Consultation from Preschool to Adulthood:
We offer coaching and consultation for individuals with ASD and their care providers around a range of skills and challenges, including, but not limited to:

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) for Children with Disruptive Behaviour:
Many children demonstrate disruptive behaviour (e.g., aggression, non-compliance with parental requests). Most disruptive behaviour is communicative - we can help you understand why your child is exhibiting challenging behaviour. With you, we will then develop family-centred and effective behaviour plans designed to teach alternative behaviours and reduce the occurrence of challenging behaviours. These services can be provided in the office or in the family's home, depending on the nature of the issue(s).

Cost for Specialized ASD Services:
Individual coaching sessions for youth, families, and adults typically take place at our clinic and cost $175/hr. Initial intake appointments typically take 1 to 1.5 hours. We offer group rates at a reduced hourly fee. Parent training in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) is $1700. This fee includes an initial intake appointment, 8 hours of direct training in PRT (4 x 2-hour sessions), and a treatment summary with recommendations. Travel outside of HRM may be subject to additional charges, at the discretion of the psychologist. Costs for ASD psychological services are reimbursed by most private insurance providers. We also offer free community information sessions for caregivers, educators, and community members for topics such as:

Specialized talks may be available for organizations for an honorarium, which is agreed upon at the time the talk is scheduled.
